No shampoo, thank you

A few months ago I stumbled across an article about washing ones hair with nothing but water, baking soda and vinegar. Intrigued and tired of all the shampoos loaded with chemicals and not wanting to pay $10 for a bottle of organic shampoo whose list of ingredients made me wonder how organic it really was, I decided to follow my philosophy that if you cant eat it, dont put it on your body. Like any detox, it takes about 4-6 weeks to see results. Once you give up shampoo you will wonder why you didnt do it sooner! Your hair will feel thick, clean and no longer be stripped of its natural oils. For those of you concerned about your hair smelling bad or becoming too oily, all you need to do is add a few drops of your favorite scents (jasmine, mint, etc) to the mixture and your hair will smell great. You will no longer need to wash your hair daily, and will find that going 2 or 3 days without washing your hair leaves no build up.

Here is what you will need to get started
1-2 tbsp of baking soda,1/2 cup water, mix and add to a cup or bottle. After your hair is wet, scrub and massage the baking soda into your scalp. Leave on for a minute or so and then rinse. The baking soda gets rid of any build up. Next, mix apple cider vinegar (few tablespoons) with 1/2 cup of water and rinse your hair with it. For extra shine you can even use a beaten egg to your hair, leave on for a minute or so and rinse out. Coffee also makes your hair shiny, just make sure to thoroughly rinse out. When you are finished and your hair has dried, apply coconut oil, olive oil or avocado to your hair for a conditioner. (you will only need to condition your hair 1 to 2 times a week.)

Ive been shampoo-free for a month now and love the results.

SalaamuAlaikum,

I just came across your blog from LifesBalanceBeam's page. You have very informative articles here, keep up the good work!

I recently saw a vid on youtube about the pH balance of hair and how baking soda really isn't good for hair. The series is really about 3-4 videos long but VERY informative! The 3rd video is the one in which she really explains the harmful effects of baking soda, but if you don't know much abt pH, I would recommend watching from part 1.

Hope you find this as informative as I did!

You can go straight to part 3 if you like..

salaam alaikum Naj,

Thanks for the video post. I watched it and found it to be very informative! I never thought about our hairs Ph levels and how certain "natural" products can bring the levels up or down causing harm to our hair. With the baking soda, most use it 2 or 3 times a week for 4-6 weeks with the goal being to eventually just use water on ones hair and maybe add some kind of scent to the water to keep their hair smelling good.

Haifa: What color is your hair? The reason I ask is depending on the color you can rinse your hair with coffee/beer for darker hair or lemon for blonde hair. Baking soda and vinegar will not make your hair color wash out it will only add shine and body to your hair since both are natural products.

Salam sis, this is so interesting. Many people have discouraged me from trying organic shampoo but after reading about your experience I think I should give it a try one of these days! Jzk for sharing!

Asalamu alaikum sis..

I tried washing my hair with baking soda and rinsing it with vinegar and it wasnt too bad!

However the egg mask.. oh boy.. LOL
I applied the egg mask to my hair and went in the shower, when I came out I noticed some white parts stuck in my hair.. Aparently the hot steam from the shower cooked the eggs on my hair! *bursts out laughing* lol

It was funny I came out and told my mum and she was laughing too.
